What are these sayings called that are maybe unique to a certain region or period in time? Like, "jumpy as a cow at milking time", Grandpa Bebe inMisty of Chincoteague often used them.
I am charmed by them and am compelled to make up some of my own. His also include, "safe as a rabbit in a briar patch", and " the sky is ..as black as the inside of a cow".I'd like to start a list , can you think of more?

I believe they are called colloquialisms. And now that you have put me on the spot I can't think of any of my favorites.
